The Department of Translation, Interpretation and Applied Linguistics was founded in 1996. Since its foundation, highly qualified lecturers and academics in the domain of translation studies, associate professors, sworn translators and interpreters by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Moldova have been teaching at the Department. The scientific activity is carried out in accordance with the mission, the vision and the core values of Moldova State University and in line with the domains of scientific interest of the members of the Department. In this respect, various scientific activities (conferences, symposiums, seminars, etc.) are organised both at national and at international level. The spirit of innovation and research is also developed among the young, through the organisation of student scientific conferences, workshops in the field of translation within different projects of common interest, in collaboration with various academic institutions in the country and abroad.

The Department of Translation, Interpretation and Applied Linguistics proposes study programmes in the domain of Translation and Interpretation, a specialty that appeals more and more to the young living in a multilingual society with an increased need of professionals of multilingual and intercultural communication. The Department of Translation, Interpretation and Applied Linguistics has four accredited Bachelor’s degree programmes: Translation and Interpretation. French Language and English; Translation and Interpretation. English Language and French; Translation and Interpretation. English Language and German; Translation and Interpretation. English Language and Italian and a Master’s degree programme Translation and Conference Interpretation. These programmes are intended to provide educational services in the domain of translation and interpretation with the aim of training and developing professional competences of would-be translators and interpreters so that they are able to work in the contemporary society which is marked by linguistic and cultural diversity oriented to general values that are promoted at European level and beyond. The study programmes reflect the needs of the labour market and the trends in the domain. The social and economic impact of the training programmes in the specialty Translation and Interpretation is determined by the following aspects: ensuring the growth and the professionalisation of human resources in the domain of translation and interpretation, training highly qualified specialists that contribute to the social-economic development of the country; filling in the vacancies in governmental and nongovernmental institutions, ministries, international organisations, embassies, associations and enterprises with foreign or mixed capital or that collaborate with international partners, translation agencies, etc. and ensuring their functionality through the implementation of new visions of their professional translation and interpreting services.

The general aim of education in this domain is to train future translators and interpreters who would be able to translate into at least two foreign languages in a broad spectrum of professional and cultural situations. The accomplishment of this objective is through the development of a series of competences: linguistic, transfer, methodological, disciplinary and technical.

Would-be translators are trained to develop linguistic competences in two languages in multimedia rooms with high-performance equipment in the domain of translation, audiovisual translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpretation in mock conference situations, under analogous conditions on the labour market. Our Department uses good practices in teaching and in conducting scientific research in the domain of translation and interpretation. In this respect, we collaborate with personalities and professors from Romania, Poland, Algeria, Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, thus encouraging the young to have access to actual instruments and develop professional and life competences in line with their aspirations in order to keep up with the rocketing developments in the multilingual and multicultural society and also to cope with the transition to the digital era.
